I have played The Rogue Prince of Persia for a few hours, and it genuinely has that old-school Prince of Persia with additions of roguelite mechanics. At first, I considered it as another action game, but the smoothness of the movement system surprised me. Running on walls, dodging traps, and mixing fighting in feels natural once you get into the rhythm.
Battle and Gameplay
The platforming-fighting-mechanic marriage didn’t feel forced. Almost one moment of wall-climbing, secret-path-exploring, and the very next moment, you find enemies around you, and you have to make quick dodges to save yourself. I messed up a lot in the beginning, but slowly, I got better at chaining attacks and jumps. If you fail at something, you’ll want that “just one more run” after.
There are lots of weapons to try and trinkets for added effects. I upgraded some of those trinkets that gave me a massive boost, and with the differences, things became much better at building a different playstyle or keeping it varied.
Plot and Setting
The game takes a Hun invasion backdrop. The Prince wades through a dark, magic-corrupted army to save Persia. The story, really interestingly, unfolds in a nonlinear manner. You do not get everything all at once, but rather, a little more is revealed in each run. The characters met during your travels and unlocking different areas gradually build the bigger picture.
The Persian world seemed colorful and lively. Nothing was boring about discovering new places, as there was always something awaiting them: an ambush from enemies, or a secret path.
Why I Liked It
This would be the combat-to-movement flow. Wall runs allow for creativity in fighting or exploring, and, quite often, when you need to make a very life-saving move, dodges and kicks do the trick. It only seems fair, even at the very hardest, proper incentive that brought me back repeatedly.
