Inkshade Overview
Inkshade is one of those games that places an uncomfortable cold feeling in the beginning. This strange shadow behind a pedestal wants you to play this wooden-boarded game for himself. You don’t step into the role of a captain: :X chasing after that mysterious place without any mention, known merely as the abyss.
First, you will be able to conquer territories, then follow an airship, and then fly through this cursed place in the skies before arriving. Not even just you alone handling this would be enough. You will have to raise a crew that does the dirty work while you direct them.
Inkshade doesn’t really make winning an easy prospect. Each playthrough seems unique, requiring thoughtful decisions, persistence, and returning to earlier points in succession. Honestly, my first time playing, I kept failing, but I didn’t feel the urge to stop playing; instead, it drove me toward giving it another try, which is what makes it highly addictive.
The crew acts as your pieces on the board. You can upgrade those pieces, assign roles, and toss them into turn-based battles. Each piece contains a particular attribute and, as you progress, you discover new abilities and classes. The puzzles and dark rooms that you unlock behind the desk really drive home the creepiness factor. It’s the little things, like those stains on the carpet, that really add to it.
Another aspect that beats all is that a crew can be recruited from between runs as the player disposes of enemies. They can be passive combatants or not, but will be included in the player’s army and battle for that side till the end.
