You never quite know what secrets lurk beyond the stillness of a suburban street. This is what makes Scrutinized so thoroughly tense and real.
Your name is Luna Youngman in the game, and you are a criminal analyst in the District Attorney’s Office. You are responsible for determining which of the people in your town may actually be dangerous while doing this from your home on a laptop. So, you’re, like, a real detective. The game gives you a whole database of clues, including old police files, text messages, social media accounts, search history, and even life purchases. Each detail might tell you something about a person being a risk or not.
I remember the first time using A.D.O.S in the game-the anticipation felt as if sitting at a real computer, but every click could bring you closer to danger or give you the info you need. One of the tools, a RootKit, allows you to hack into a virtual cellphone. You can slide the bar to try and find the right code. This makes it simple to start, and it really gets tricky when you have multiple reports and threats.
Normal hours are kept by Luna during the day, but nights are challenging. You don’t just keep awake to put in more stuff to report: there are killers out there, and every mistake gets you. On top of work, you also need to be aware of your environment. Just walking around Luna’s house in the game and checking that the windows have been closed and the lights are on just added to the tension. One would need to be alert, as even a small mistake may make one get caught.
You collect evidence in all ten simulated nights, file reports safely, and survive. The game keeps you in suspense all the while. I certainly ended up checking all the windows and listening for noises, just as Luna did. Getting through all ten nights without paparazzi abducting you provides a bit of achievement, as well as the fantasy of the calm, sunny days that Luna imagines after all that chaos.

Scrutinized is an amalgamation of horror, investigation, and strategy. Personally, I enjoyed how it made me feel like a real detective while keeping the tension very high. If you enjoy games with plenty of thinking, in which you must be alert, and in which difficult odds must be survived, then this game is one that you should definitely check out.
