BOULDER DASH 40th Anniversary Overview
I still have memories of being a kid playing the first BOULDER DASH, and, boy, this 40th Anniversary version checks almost all boxes. It feels like the game has grown up but retained its old-school charm.
The player controls Rockford as he digs through caves to collect diamonds and avoid falling boulders. There are enemies everywhere, and one small wrong move could mean death. The first levels are easy, but after that, plan your steps wisely if you wish to survive and get to the end of the stage.
This edition has a ton of content. Expect 180 new levels and 60 classic levels remade from the original trilogy. This edition also features 6 new worlds and includes levels made by super hardcore Boulder Dash fans. New mechanics have been introduced-girders which grow, acid rocks, and surprise eggs which can completely change your game plan.
The level editor is something I spent hours on. You can craft your own caves or download community-made ones. The game just never seems to end because there’s always something new out there to try.
The graphics are smooth and clean, much more than I expected, and Chris Huelsbeck’s soundtrack is fab. You can choose from 3 heroes-inspired by the classic designs, which adds a personal touch.
It’s not just a straight remake. It is the whole BOULDER DASH experience for any fans of retro games, tricky puzzles, or whoever just wants to find out why this game was such a big thing back in 1984.
