Rage of Towers really is other than at all like the tacky, typical tower defense game. Usually, these games just throw some tower, and it just shoots away at the enemies, and that’s the game. This is very much in that you are in the melee. I played for the first time and I was surprised because everything else had to be done quickly, with the movement of my units and controlling some heralds performe themselves.
The maps aren’t static; enemies don’t move just one line. They come in groups, use different paths, and sometimes fly directly through your defense. That forced me to keep adjusting my setup instead of sitting back, especially waiting.
One of the best things is jumping into a tower and firing weapons directly. Like I tried controlling missiles with myself and hitting air units by myself, it was way more fun than sitting and watching. You also tend to have drones and tanks that can actually shift around in real-time, which is super helpful when one side is about to fall.
The game gives you a good arsenal of towers. They include machine guns, artillery, rockets, Tesla towers, air strikes, and much more. However, the towers do not build magically. In the end, the actual fun part is how you combine them together. For instance, I would slow them using Tesla shocks, then blow them to pieces with artillery, and that combo saved me in a late wave.
Evolving smarter enemies as you start with the basic soldiers, face some tanks and shielded enemies, and then they progress to surprise air ambushes. Some waves even change tactics, which has thrown me off once or twice. Each map presents its own traps and terrain effects, totaling 45 levels.
There are two major game types. The campaign lets you progress through story missions, which escalate in difficulty. Endless mode, however, is pure survival as I try to last as long as I can against eternal waves. Not getting bored is also done by unlocking more upgrades, towers, and mobile units with time.
