The Isles & Tiles Review
Isles and Tiles are those types of games in which you are fooled so easily, thinking it is simple, but the more you play, the deeper it goes. It is about pulling up land for the sea and shaping it into your own island with cards, a turn-based resource management game. All of these expansions, settlers, and resource management, while dealing with both luck and strategy, make it fun.
When I first tried this game, I thought it would just be placing tiles, but I wound up loving the surprise of growing your small deck of basic cards, unlocking more along the way, and then modifying how the island grows. Suddenly, you have got forests for more wood, mountains for stone, and you have even changed the coastlines. Each island ends up looking completely different, so I’d want to start over again after every run.
At first, it’s very slow and quiet. Your settlers are not demanding. After some time, the needs go up, and there would come a time when you’d have to decide whether to keep them alive or just let them die to design the craziest island imaginable. I liked playing around and creating weird islands, even if my people were not satisfied.
There are legendary cards in the game, though it also has antiques, and both change the rules in a big way. For one run, I got myself a previously rare card that entirely flipped my strategy. You also have to make choices like whether you keep magical items all for yourself or share them with settlers, along with making decisions like whether to keep magical items for yourself or share them with settlers.
If you have played games such as Catan, Carcassonne, or Dorfromantik, Isles & Tiles should sound familiar, yet with more strategy because it combines tile laying with deck building. On top of that, the soundtracks are just really soothing. It’s inspired by Breton folk music, so that even when the game gets more difficult, the sound makes it more relaxing.
