The charm of Kentucky evenings is strange. When the sun sinks beneath the horizon, the birds stop their singing and, with the start of the frog’s calls, the night air becomes a cacophony of chirping. Insects join in, and with this chorus, the ambience changes! Even roads you’ve come to know well seem to shift, and on some rare occasions, perhaps good or bad depending on what you believe in, an old highway might welcome you into subterranean caves beneath the ground.
Not only can you travel on this road, but you also get to meet people. At first, they seem odd, but after hanging out with them for a while, one gets used to their eccentricities. An old delivery man is seeing his last customers for a small antiques store that is about to shut down forever. Somewhere is a girl working in a hardware shop with a bunch of ghosts helping her repair faded-out old TVs. A boy is travelling with an enormous eagle, treating it like his best buddy. You’re also likely to encounter robot musicians, an invisible corporation controlling almost every field, and an array of communities trying to finally resist its authority.
An odd breeze envelops Kentucky Route Zero, keeping it apart from all the familiar action-packed games. It is an adventure spread across five acts. The tale mixes elements from the everyday and the dreamlike. The atmosphere is further enriched with the ethereal sound of electronic noises mingled with traditional hymns and bluegrass songs recorded by The Bedquilt Ramblers.
The visual presentation stands alone. Perhaps it could be called a formulation of theater shows, film scenes, and experimental works, not corresponding to the video games formed by classical standards. The narrative covers the weighty concepts of unpayable debts, futures that were never built, and the search for human connections in situations that appear to be hopeless.
When I played it, it felt like I was participating in something much larger than a game. Some scenes were so placid yet moving that I had to pause and just think about them. It reminded me of how games can feel more like stories we live in, not just levels we complete.
