I played The Dark Queen of Mortholme last week, and honestly, this is one of those games that really remains in one’s memory long after playing it. Instead of the Hero, you are the villain, or at least what you could call the Dark Queen here in this game. You’re the last wall standing between the Hero and the final credits.
It’s as simple as that: Small screen, pixel graphics, and the non-stop duel against a Hero who never really quits. At first, I thought it’d become boring over time, but it didn’t. The constant return of the Hero made the fight feel without end, and so it weighed down on me more than I expected.
Story and Choices
This isn’t simply a mindless button-mashing fight game. The Dark Queen of Mortholme PC version will allow its users to choose some dialogue options, and those will affect the outcome of the game. I actually had two totally different endings from only two playthroughs. In one, I was brought to rethink things by the Hero’s side, while in the other, I was true to the Queen’s power.
What caught me off guard is precisely that, because I wasn’t expecting such a tiny game to be replayable.
