Star Birds is a space management and base-building game where you look after a colony of space birds. The concept is simple: mine the asteroids, collect resources, and expand the base bit by bit.
Star Birds, when I first played it, I was not sure that it would keep my interest, but it turned out to be a very relaxing experience. No rushing, no stress! Just build and explore at my own pace.
Gameplay Breakdown
Building on Asteroids
You are building on floating asteroids. Each asteroid has a different shape, so you need to think about how to fit everything. You need to connect your facilities with pipes and set up a proper flow of resources. Each time it feels more like a little puzzle.
Resource Gathering
The main resources are ice, metals, and some odd stuff you dig out of the asteroids. These are used for production. As you progress, you begin to make more complex items and ultimately automated systems.
Exploration
It is not mining alone. You can explore the surfaces and find hidden objects; you can even unearth some strange artifacts. This gives an element of curiosity to the game. One amazing experience was stumbling across one such artifact-it was so gratifying because I really was not expecting it.
Quests and Story
To keep things interesting, different mission objectives are given. Some aren’t tougher, but others give hints to an even greater mystery that lies in distant star systems. Slowly following those clues makes you want to keep expanding your network.
The Automation and Watch Progress
Eventually, the game becomes rather easy after putting in its time. Everything is simply on autopilot. I really preferred just sitting there watching the birds transport resources as the system created its mini factory.
Extra Challenges
There are some collections to complete and medals to earn. While these are not a must, they serve as little extra goals for those who enjoy perfecting their setup.
Why You Might Like It
Star Birds presents itself as something more interesting: an anti-game, really. It is calming and, instead of combat, creating something expansive has taken centre stage. For myself, the balance between the peaceful building experience and odd surprises from the missions was just right.
