Ratatan is a rhythm-based roguelike action game that diversifies the side-scrolling battle with rhythmic gameplay, and, of course, you can play online against three other friends.
When I played it for the first time, I thought it was just going to be another music game, but it is so much more than that. You get tapped along by the soundtrack without even realizing it, but once the battle begins, it feels like a huge concert turning into a fight. There are more than 100 characters clashing together, and if your movements match the beat, you can crush enemies in style.
World of Rataport
The story unfolds in Rataport, which is a colorful land in the calm sea. This place looks all playful and alive. As if you have a giant toy box, they also join the Ratatan creatures. They are of a different kind, but the aspiration is the same for all.
They want to go to a place called The Everafter and meet The Goddess, who is believed to live there. The road for them is not easy, though. They try again and again, but they never give up hope. Indeed, it reminded my school days when I used to keep failing at a level in a game but still tried until I finally cleared it. That same determination, though much more grand, is shown by the Ratatans.
Rhythm Action Gameplay
Rhythm defines Ratatan. You must know the beat to command your Cobuns. Timing is really important to send them off, to position, and to retreat
At first, it was all rhythm, and I got crushed, but after a few attempts, it clicked. Once you have the timing down, it feels so smooth- almost as though you’re playing an instrument. 2D animation also makes it that bit special and somehow charms all its moves.

My Thoughts
I’ve played a ton of rhythm games before, but Ratatan just did something really well by combining action with a story and music. Playing with friends makes it even better since you all try to sync with the rhythm at the same time. For anyone invested in rhythm games or looking for something fresh with action and music, Ratatan is one definitely worth a download.
