Tokyo Xtreme Racer on my PC felt very much like the street racing kind of themes I used to envision while watching Japanese racing shows back in the day. One gets into a closed-off version of Tokyo where the highways are your battlefields. It is not about the speed; it is about earning respect.
You have your car, you tune it, and then you hit the expressway, challenging rivals. The atmosphere is very real, especially for those into driving games that focus more on rivals in head-to-head combat rather than completing laps.
What Is SP Battle in Tokyo Xtreme Racer
The most unique part about this game is the SP Battle system. All races are about Spirit Points rather than who crosses the line first. The more reckless you drive and the further behind you fall, the larger the loss within your spirit bar. Your rival suffers the same fate. First to lose all points loses. It is more of a mental battle than a juice-up-the-gas-pedal argument. I, for one, have enjoyed this entire concept, forcing you to be strategic and not just off the line.
Racing on the Tokyo Expressway
What I most loved was racing around the Shuto Expressway at midnight. The highways look detailed with all the curves, elevation changes, and traffic. You feel like you are in the middle of Tokyo at night, dashing between cars while listening to the engine echo through the tunnels at full throttle.
Confronting Rivals on the Road
Every opponent you take on has a different car and a different set of driving behaviours. Some are aggressive from the get-go, while others wait until just the right moment to put the pressure on. The first flash of headlights to commence the race really sets the tone. It reminded me of watching Initial D back in the day when a battle starts with a silent signal.
