I had a go with the game named The Farmer Was Replaced, and it’s a lot of fun if you like farming mixed with coding. The simple idea of the game is to use a smaller, derivable Python-like programming language to get a drone to do all the farming work for you. Instead of doing everything the hard way, you write a few lines of code, press “execute,” and happily watch the drone get to work. It’s such a cool experience seeing all the tasks done while just relaxing and watching your farm grow.
By seeming a bit technical for a beginner, you would find the game to explain everything step-by-step, starting from basic programming concepts, which are easy to pick up even if you have never worked with code before. When I started playing it, I didn’t have that much experience in coding, but the level-wise opening of commands really helped. It is playing and learning at the same time, and that’s what I really liked about it.
If you know a little programming already, that part will be a piece of cake for you. But it becomes trickier, and a lot more enjoyable, as you go along. You’ll be writing longer programs, speeding up your drone, and eventually automating much bigger tasks. It is a nice combination of education and entertainment.
One thing I found interesting is that the game is not level-based like other programming games. Rather, it’s a kind of continuum where you just keep upgrading your setup, unlocking new tech, and becoming a better automation master. The more you farm, the more resources you get to spend on upgrades.
After an improvement or two, the drone becomes really fast. Watching it zoom over the fields with speed upgrades was so satisfying. Natural-feeling progress; each upgrade gives you a reason to keep playing.
