Backrooms: Extractions is a horror cooperative game playable alone or with six friends at most. Everything takes place in the spine-chilling Backrooms, where one comma will mark your end.
The objective is simple yet challenging: Finding and saving missing M.E.G. agents languishing deep within these bizarre hallways. Search the area, send their location, and then wait for extraction while avoiding detection from the ugly creatures lurking around.
Endless Loop Mode
There is a new game mode called the Endless Loop. It is a test mode set by M.E.G., and you just keep on looping through levels that get harder each time.
With each new loop, the opponents become fiercer. They become more aggressive, and it becomes more difficult to find supplies. The only loot you receive from this mode is supply crates that pop up on each level. This mode really tests your patience and how chilled you can keep while everything’s tumbling down.
When I played, I got stuck on the third loop. My hands were sweaty, and the sounds from the dark halls got me panicking a lot. But really, it added to the fun.
Play Solo or With Friends
Alone, if you want the tense, claustrophobic vibe, it just doesn’t feel as entertaining. The game is way more fun with your friends.
Communication is the key in this game. It has a voice chat system, and frighteningly, enemies can hear you. So, speak too loudly, and you may accidentally attract their attention. My friend once screamed at the sight of a Smiler, and we all got chased after that.
How Extraction Works
Extraction isn’t about running, honey; it is about helping others.
Retrieve the coordinates of trapped M.E.G. agents and wait until their extraction has been completed. Successful rescues will net you useful items and earn you standings in the M.E.G. team. Levelling up gives access to new tools and levels, and skins to customize your play.
After plenty of unsuccessful attempts, nothing beats the thrill of a good rescue.
Levels You Can Explore
Currently, seven areas are available for you to roam in:
Lobby, Habitable Zone, Paradise, Attic Floorboard, Utility Halls, Fun, and The Suburbs.
Each one looks unique. Some areas are eerily quiet and calm, while others are bustling with noise and movement. Each area has different puzzles and creatures to encounter. Developers mentioned there will be more levels in the future.
Enemies and Their Behaviors
The Backrooms aren’t vacant. Six main enemies, Thirsting Smiler, Wretches, Hounds, Skin Stealers, Party-Goers, and Balloons wait inside.
Every single one acts differently. Some try to slowly sneak up on you, while others sprint towards you. An example is that in the Fun level, the balloons seem harmless until they pop, and that’s when you go screaming for your life.
Knowing how to deal with them should increase your odds of survival. I found that just listening carefully to the sounds around me made a big difference.
