Vampire: The Masquerade-Bloodlines 2 managed to pull me into a hypnotic state the first time I tried it. You’re a Nomad, an ancient vampire. You wake up after falling asleep for over a hundred years. The world has changed, and with it, the city you once knew. There’s this strange voice inside your head-Fabien, a vampire detective-guiding you through the streets of today’s Seattle. This is kind of creepy but also exciting since he helps you uncover a mystery that mingles the past and what’s happening now.
The game dropped you in a live city at night. You can almost feel the danger in the air. Seattle looks dark, rainy, and full of secrets. As I strolled through the streets, I began to notice the different vampire clans, each with a different way of doing things. I liked how you could do things your way-walk in strong with raw power, or clever tricks to control your enemies.
Here, blood is life: hunt and feed carefully without humans discovering your true identity. I learned that when you break the Masquerade and reveal yourself as a vampire, all hell breaks loose. The law comes in; other vampires won’t like it either. It has been a bit precious and, like stealth games, patience pays off rather than rushing in.
The fighting is bright and real. You can fight face-to-face using supernatural strength or attack with blood magic from a distance. Personally, I like sneaking into enemy territory more, though. It felt thrilling to creep in the shadows and see others be completely oblivious that I was right behind them. Different clans give you different powers to experiment with different ways to play.
One of the coolest things is how your choices matter. Whether you go by the rules of vampire society or break them entirely, the story takes you deep within the vampire politics, where everyone wants power, and trust is rare. You also choose who to side with, and this has consequences for what happens next.
Seattle in-game is beautiful and dangerous at the same time. You will get to meet all sorts of weird people; some will be helpful, while some will decidedly not. The way this game mixes mystery, horror, and RPG elements makes it really fun to explore. It reminded me of the classic cult version, but with a much more modern and polished touch.
If you are someone who loves games with deep stories set in dark places, this is something you’ll be interested in.
