Overview
The latest big title in Yuji Horii, Akira Toriyama, and Koichi Sugiyama’s long-running RPG series is DRAGON QUEST XI S. This is the eleventh main title in this series, and you could enjoy this even if you had never played any of the older ones. It tells a fresh story with new characters, with the overall world not too limiting in terms of all the towns to explore.
The game is pretty much the perfect blend of turn-based fighting, combined seamlessly with great graphics and fluid gameplay. It ended up getting rave reviews when released in Japan, having won the PlayStation Platinum Prize and earned a perfect 40 out of 40 from Famitsu. I still remember playing the original version on my console a few years ago, and getting lost in its world for hours. It’s one of those games that actually makes you care about the story.
Story
You’re a young guy about to participate in a coming-of-age ceremony in your small village. It is during this event that he discovers he actually is the reincarnation of a great hero in ancient times. This is when everything changes.
After revealing the truth to the King, he is then branded “The Darkspawn” and entered into a manhunt in which soldiers pursue him. Prompted to flee, he soon finds himself in the company of loyal companions who regard him as “The Luminary,” destined savior of the world.
Together, they will cross towns, woods, and oceans, casting under the veil of history before facing an ancient evil that threatens to destroy the world. And the adventure sometimes got emotional, closing friendships among characters just like that, very real. To be honest, they seemed like my real team to me.
Gameplay Experience
DRAGON QUEST XI S must be one of my personal favorites because it lets you play how you want. I’d rock the old school 2D for nostalgia some days and flip back to 3D when I wanted the pure sights. Soundtracks change everything, as pretty much the entire mood, especially while using the orchestral soundtrack.
Combat has a turn-based nature, but it really feels very swift and responsive. Promises to work out easy yet effective styles in accordance with a character’s fighting style and their personality, and this keeps things fun. Side quests prove exciting, as well, and are good for added rewards and little bits.
