If you’ve ever read those creepy Backrooms stories online, this game brings that same eerie feeling to life. Escape the Backrooms is a first-person horror adventure where you explore endless yellow rooms that all look the same but somehow feel different each time you turn a corner.
Playing it for the first time, it felt like entering a bad dream that just didn’t seem like stopping. You start in some weird, empty place that resembles an office in a very dank condition, with fluorescent buzzing lights overhead and wet carpets underneath. You just walk, and the rooms do not stop. The scary part: they never seem real, and even whether something’s actually there or it’s in your head is not clear.
The game allows you to play solo or with up to four friends. Co-op mode makes it way more fun and stressful at the same time. I was with friends one night, and we were hollering at each other not to go off. One of us got through the floor and into another level, and we lost him. It is one of those games that relies on communication. You can talk using proximity voice chat, but the creatures can hear you too, so sometimes it’s safer to just whisper or stay quiet.
Each level contains its own escape path and new dangers. At present, there are eight main levels, and the developers are continuing to add more through updates. Some areas are dark, others are filled with very strange noises messing with your mind. The design feels inspired by those old internet horror stories, and it really nails that uncomfortable feeling of being stuck in an endless maze.
The goal is simple yet tough: find the exit before anything finds you. And here’s the catch — everyone on your team has to make it out alive. If even a single person is lost or taken, you fail, after all. That is what makes the co-op part so tense.
Honestly, this game has always given me chills. The atmosphere, the lighting, and even the echoing sounds seem to create a sense of reality. I recall being stuck in one level for about an hour because I couldn’t tell whether the sounds behind me were my friends or something else.
This game’s worth a watch if one is really interested in horror games, mostly on tension and mystery, and less on jump scares. Escape the Backrooms should be up on the list of the worthiest horror games. You may also be interested in: The Jackbox Party Pack 11 Free Download (Build 806) for Windows PC
