I really did not expect My Little Puppy to make me cry when I started playing it on my PC. The story revolves around Bong-gu, the really adorable Welsh Corgi. He was once owned by a master who just abandoned him after some time. One can really tell that someone did care for him before, though, because his tail was docked. After getting left behind, he ended up at an animal shelter. He’s already pretty old-about eight years old-and has few health issues, so no one really wanted to adopt him. Watching him spend his days inside a cage just broke my heart.
Then, however, something really nice happens. One day, a man comes there and takes Bong-gu home. The guy looks pretty messy and shy, but Bong-gu takes to him immediately, as if he knows that this man is special. From that day, Bong-gu’s life takes a complete turn. He begins living like a happy dog in all respects, playing, eating, running about, and napping without worries. When the time eventually came for him, he crossed the rainbow bridge peacefully after a life well lived.
But that’s not where it ends.
One day in dog heaven, Bong-gu smells something familiar. It’s the scent of his dad! He doesn’t think about it and starts following him. That’s when the real adventure starts. He leaves this area of dogs and begins his journey to get Dad back. That world he enters is, at once, both strange and familiar. Somewhere between life and death.
The emotional vibes were so palpable in the game and in each scene; Bong-gu travels through really beautiful places, from deserts, snowy mountains, and beaches. The visuals are simple but touching; the music fits well with the tale. What adds up to the interest, though, is that this game has various gameplay styles mixed in one game. There are exploration parts, races, and action bits. Not too complicated but still very fun to play.
Because you play as a dog, your actions will definitely be limited. Bong-gu can sniff, bark, jump, and run, but he cannot just do things easily. To go forward, he will need to help and get help from other characters: people and other dogs with independent stories, who will give him something significant in his journey.
This reminded me a little of when I lost my own pet some years ago. It was such soft, emotive memories that this game brought back to me from many years ago. Not that the graphics are grand or the action fast-paced; it is more about connection, love, and memories.
My Little Puppy is definitely a game to check out if you are into games that get to the heart, deep down, and into stories that make one feel something real. It’s the kind of game that has stayed on one’s mind long after finishing it.
