When I started up A I L A, to be honest, I was quite unsure what to expect. I like the horror genre, yet in some sense, this one got to me differently. The gameplay shows one as an A.I.L.A tester who goes through some bizarre and creepy scenarios. At times, I had the feeling that the game was reading my mind; it got dark and deep. Through the seconds of that game, I had to take mini-breaks.
The game would put you in another scary situation. At times, you would try to survive against a cult putting on some outlandish ritual. Apparently, some puzzles are also set among such unnerving imagery that they felt uncomfortable; then you could be fighting some old medieval undead, and suddenly it becomes extremely chaotic. More than once, I was caught off guard.
Face Your Fear
You game-test and also speak with A I L A in-me. She listens to you speak; she reacts to your fear and your assessments. I seriously feel she wanted me to fail. There were times when I even turned my volume down out of nerves.
Many Horror Situations
The game is not limited by any one horror modality. One moment, it seems like survival, then it turns psychological, then simply an outburst. Each of these aspects is distinct, and that keeps you alert throughout. I liked that because it was never boring.
New Style of Horror Game
A I L A was made using the Unreal Engine. Graphics look highly realistic. I could feel the atmosphere because everything was very sharp and clear. The lighting effects are very realistic, as are the faces. At some moments, I forgot this was a game. Maybe this is precisely why I was frightened more than ever before.
