When I first learned that there was a Cowboy Life Simulator for the PC, my unbiased reasoning was to think that yet another heavy cowboy game had come into being. But a few hours into it, it felt more of a slow, peaceful break from everything. The game sets you in the shoes of a tired business guy who leaves it all behind for the Wild West. You start with almost nothing, save a goat and a bag of grain. It took me back to my first attempt at gardening in real life, where I got everything wrong but really liked the feeling of starting fresh.
It’s about simple cowboy life, ranching, meeting people, and exploring an enormous map filled with all kinds of places. Nothing really puts you in a hurry; the way I like you can actually enjoy things at your own pace.
Open World Exploration
This is a huge world for you to walk around and explore. There are secret spots, tiny areas with tales to tell, and troubles that one has to sort. At times, I just rode without a point because it felt nice.
Ranch Building
From scratch, you build your ranch. You might build barns, fences, storage, tiny farms, and install tiny decorations in them. It took me back to when I used to make tiny setups at my cousin’s farm.
Farming and Animal Care
You grow and take care of over twenty different crops. And you need to feed and care for the animals. It feels like tedious work, yet oddly calming.
Crafting
You can craft some beginner items in order to manage and survive the ranch. Nothing very complex. Most of the things just keep you going.
Home Decorating
You can decorate the house with basic items, such as tools, old cans, or small household objects. It gives you the feel of home and your little cowboy experience.
Local Community and Story
Bravestand Town harbors more people with contrasting personalities. You speak to them, do favours for them, and slowly weave yourself into their narratives. Some quests made me chuckle a bit; others were tear-jerkers.
Mysteries and Secrets
Hidden stories can be found within the map, slow mysteries scattered far from the main town. Found a couple of secrets while wandering off in no particular direction.
Character Progression
You level up your skill by farming, fame, and frontier experience. Very slow growing somehow feels very realistic.
Light Survival
A little something to be busy with that makes the game require you to collect resources and monitor the basic needs of your character. Nothing overwhelming.
Weapons and Combat
There are different kinds of weaponry, which one can use either to defend against vicious animals or against any local troublemakers. Weapon upgrading politics are also included here.
