A Bullet Hell Game Taking Over Your Desktop
Imagine that your mouse is not only for clicking, but your last line of defense from wave after wave of enemies. That is Desktop Survivors 98. Fast-paced, chaotic, and fun to death? It turns your desktop into a battlefield where reflexes dictate whether you live or die.
Why This Game Offers an Unusual Experience
Most games are confined to a window or full-screen mode. Not this game. Desktop Survivors 98 simply plays over your desktop; thus, enemies and bullets will fly past the folders, browser tabs, or whatever else you have opened up. It feels very weirdly awesome, apparently, your PC is fighting back.
Gameplay? Basic but punishing. You move the cursor to dodge the incoming attacks while shelling out your own shots. Initially, everything seems so casual, and then the screen starts piling up with bullets, and you realize you’re sweating. Randomly generated dungeons make every run unique, and the upgrades you come across can vastly alter how you play.
What I liked (and what is hard)
The retro aesthetic nails old-school PC feels without coming across as cheesy.
Any upgrades feel meaningful; some combinations turn you into an unstoppable force (until something much worse makes you regret your hubris).
The ability to pause it at any time is a blessing if you truly need to alt-tab to attend to something else (or catch a breath).
