Backyard Football 1999 was among the very first sports games I played as a child. It was uncomplicated, not glamorous, and just provided that sort of fun which kept one coming back. I played it on my uncle’s old computer; I still remember those arguments with him about who picked Barry Sanders or Jerry Rice on his team. And, of course, Pablo Sanchez was everyone’s first choice since he could do it all.
That updated version now plays nicely on your modern Windows PC, so there will be no worries about compatibility. It is nice loading it up and seeing the same characters I grew up with.
Game Modes
Single Game
Good for when you’re just in the mood for a quick match. Choose your team, create a logo, and play your game on one of five backyard fields, where each field has a different weather scenario; no game ever feels the same.
Season Mode
Now, this is where it feels like real football. You draft seven players from the roster of Backyard kids and pro NFL stars Jerry Rice, Barry Sanders, Dan Marino, John Elway, and more. The 14-game season is then played for your team to reach the playoffs. Take it from me; I once did a whole season over the summer, and it truly felt like carrying the Super Colossal Cereal Bowl trophy when my team lifted the trophy in a win that felt like the actual Super Bowl.
Why It’s Still Fun
Backyard Football ’99 is simple, and that’s why it remains enjoyable to this day. There are easy controls, the commentary from Sunny Day and Chuck Downfield is hilarious, and the game has never really taken itself too seriously. For me, it’s not just football but about the feeling of nostalgia sitting with friends and cousins, sharing the keyboard, and erupting with cheers for every touchdown.
