The Citadel, which was supposed to be the last line of defense for mankind, has fallen. The Apocalypse is now ruled completely by trumpeters. Most importantly, you are the Martyr, the last hope sent by the Seven Angels who are guardians of mankind. You have to bring down the trumpeters and unlock the secrets buried deep down within the Citadel. Guided by a mysterious signal, your mission is to bring down the trumpeters and unearth the mysteries buried.
From the get-go, Beyond Citadel captured me completely. The old-school 90s shooter mixed with 2.5D anime graphics puts such a new twist on things. The very first levels were completely engrossing.
Beyond Citadel is a single-player FPS that lets you relive the nostalgia of classic shooting. The game depends on letting you enjoy the realistic weapon mechanics while offering a high-speed, action-packed experience. You really have to think ahead when it comes to which weapon you would take with you through each encounter and how to handle that interaction.
Realistic Weapons and Gunplay
Honestly, the selection of weapons ranks among my favorite things about the game. I mean, one can choose between black-powder firearms and futuristic energy guns. Each behaves differently, so you have to adapt tactics. Plus, weapon degradation and occasional locking characterize combat. I remember one boss fight when my favorite rifle jammed right in the middle, and I was forced to switch quickly, or I would have been toast.
Diverse Locations and Tough Enemies
Levels were created by hand in Beyond Citadel. Each level has areas that are both indoor and outdoor. New skills are picked up along with better equipment. Enemies within the game are brutal and diverse. There will be foot soldiers, massive armored vehicles, and terrifying creatures. There was this one outdoor level where I ended up cornered by a huge group of enemies, and I had to think fast to survive. Pretty intense, but at the same time really rewarding.
Atmospheric World and Unique Characters
The world of Beyond Citadel is dark and gripping. The world isn’t all by itself, as allies come alongside to help you through the battles to make the fights even more interesting. Destruction effects in the game are wonderful and help to bring the apocalyptic world alive. All the characters I met had their own personalities, which is another aspect that made the story feel deeper than just shooting enemies.
