Bye Sweet Carole is one of those games that will be really catching if you really love mysteries with old cartoons. It is made by Chris Darril, the guy who made the series Remothered, and now, it mixes a creepy story with a beautiful hand-drawn art style that feels like it is watching an old cartoon, but with a dark twist.
The setting is early 1900s England, when women’s rights were a big topic. You play as an orphan called Lana Benton who is looking for her one lost friend, Carole Simmons. The search brings her gradually into Bunny Hall orphanage, a full secret place that leads slowly into another strange world called Corolla.
Corolla would be something of a fantasy world, wherein the frightening heads are Mr. Kyn-a torture met with dark motives-and Velenia-an owl that screams nightmares. And there are those weird things called tar bunnies, making it worse. Honestly, while I was playing, I got chills due to some scenes, as it sounds so honest and alive yet haunted.
What I liked second-most was that the game reminds me of those old 90s animated movies I watched in my childhood. The art style may seem soft and hand-painted, though every location has its own mood. Walking around Bunny Hall gave me that feeling of being trapped in an old mystery book where every door hides something new.
The gameplay keeps you occupied with puzzles and sneaking. You have to use caution because one wrong move can end very badly. There is also a bit of light platforming, which spices things up and gives the game a pretty well-rounded feel between story and challenge.
Anyone who loves indie horror story adventure games should give this one a shot at least once. It feels sentimental and emotional: it hardly ranks as a horror title by itself.

Well, from memory, I thought Bye Sweet Carole might be in one of the games where there would be some emotional slaps in the face. Simple but profound storytelling, along with nostalgic art-memories in some way. The kind of game that sticks around in your mind after one plays it.
