Chip ‘n Clawz vs. The Brainioids is such an action-oriented, shooting real-time strategy that feels both fun and a little mad. The game is developed by Julian Gollop it’s creator X-COM, meaning that it really blends tactical play with direct battles. The story starts when Brainioids, strange alien creatures, invade the land and steal all Brainium crystals. They hide them inside floating Grav Spheres, and only one bunch of heroes answers the adventure: Chip, a young inventor, and his robot cat Clawz. That’s the team you will control throughout the whole procedure.
The fun part is how it keeps changing styles back and forth. One minute, you’re building bases and vehicles, and before you know it, you’re in the middle of a firefight, blasting aliens with whatever weapon you can come up with. I got the chance to play it over the weekend, and the best part for me was how smooth it felt switching between commanding and fighting. You never feel bored because you are always busy doing something.
There is a main story campaign, but you also have side missions that let you try out different plans and upgrades. Boss fights are difficult. It really doesn’t throw huge enemies at you; it also has to keep your base alive at the same time. It gets fun in a stress-filled way.
You can play it solo, but with friends, it’s better. I tried co-op with my friend, and it honestly made the battles way more enjoyable. Couch coop is included, which is nice if you’re chilling at home, and, of course, if you like a little competition, there’s PvP. You can go 1v1 or 2v2, even split-screen. The game also has cross-platform multiplayer, so you don’t have to have the same console as your friends to join up.
The design reminds you of a comic book coming to life with vibrant colors, humorous yet dangerous crouching villains, and hidden items. You will come across rare comics that tell more of the story and give you blueprints for new weapons or upgrades for your army. Lots of the enemies look funny but also creepy, especially the ones with brains floating in jars.
I think this is the type of game that feels refreshing because it’s not one style. This is shooting, building, and planning together, and if you’re a fan of action games but also like the old, slow strategy type, then this is a must-try game.
