Overview of City Springs
From the start, City of Springs feels different. The sound of gears and constant ticking, smoke hanging in the air – it all feels alive but broken. You play as Val, a sharp mechanic with roots in Riveton’s slums. She is sick of the elite in the monarch’s name enjoying luxury while the rest struggle daily in the sweatshops.
This is a game of punishment by the government. Not only must they control food and water, but also everything about what you are supposed to say. Raise your voice, and punishment follows with the cutting off of supplies. I found this to be relatable because real life sometimes feels like this; the strongest among us decide how the rest of us should live. That’s why I loved the play of Val because she did not keep quiet.
Even with Riveton being a city of oppressive machines and heartless ministers, people still find the spirit to smile, laugh, and live life just like normal. That’s what makes this city feel so real. Val enters into a hope-giving agent. With the scrap available to her, she creates drones and uses them to fight off the robotic guards that patrol the streets.
The game gives complete freedom in choosing how to fight. You can sneak past the enemies, hack systems to avoid being noticed, or go for the action and smash your enemies with your drones. Every alley and secret corner is resource-abundant, making exploration as important as combat.
It all means stealth, crafting, and action in a world made of steam and machines. You are not surviving; you are bringing change. To me, every mission was a step towards fixing Riveton and restoring freedom for its people.
