Dispatch is one such superhero comedy game developed by the same team behind Tales from the Borderlands and The Wolf Among Us. Los Angeles sets the scenario, where the world of heroes does not shine as bright as it appears.
You are playing as Robert Robertson, otherwise known as Mecha Man, who lost his mech-suit battling his archrival and now has to work with a superhero dispatch center. Instead of saving the world, you now manage a team of ex-supervillains attempting to turn good. I got to play it recently, and it is surprisingly entertaining to watch heroes bicker over who gets chosen for missions. At the same time, things get pushed around on desks by yours truly, with choices of actual consequence being made in the process.
This game is about choices. Every decision you take, from what to say during little chats in the breakroom to deciding on big missions on which the fates of whole worlds hang, affects the story. The relationships you grow with heroes and how they respond to you change the endings of the story. I thought it interesting that even the simplest of these actions, like sending the wrong hero on a mission, can create a situation completely out of the blue.
A strategy map lets you survey city emergencies as they pop up and send out heroes to handle them. Sometimes you get it just right, other times you mess up, but that’s where the fun lies. Every hero has their own personality and flaws, which can stir drama if you are not careful. You may upgrade them with new abilities, adding a nice depth.
My favorite aspect is the blend between humor and strategy. It never takes itself too seriously, but at the same time, it manages to trigger a sense of decision-making. The story feels natural, and the characters are easy to relate to.
If you like story-based strategy games with light comedy, then you should check Dispatch out. It’s really more about what happens when the heroes face real-world problems, like office work and broken machines, than simply being a hero.
