In essence, FIFA 20 was launched on 27 September 2019, and even till now, the excitement tends to linger. It wasn’t like just another FIFA release. EA brought up several new things that made the game feel fresher and more exciting, especially the new VOLTA Football mode, which took that old-school FIFA Street vibe and brought you small street courts, rooftops, and cages where you were actually able to play football.
There was just something different about it. The gameplay had been reworked so as to give matches more of a look, feel, and authenticity. The “Football Intelligence” system enabled AI players to get more intelligent at positioning, while there was now “Strafe Dribbling”, which gave better ball control. Defending felt fairer with “Controlled Tackling”, and every goal, off increasingly improved free kicks and penalties, feels earned. The new ball physics have a tendency to inject a bit more randomness in spins and bounces, making each game much less predictable but fun.
VOLTA Football Mode
The biggest difference for me was VOLTA Football, in that it allowed you to do games across 17 locations from across the world, from 3v3 to 4v4 to 5v5 futsal, and makes your avatar, personalizes your outfits, and plays a story mode akin to a mini football movie. It even had the online Volta League, which was fantastic because it allowed you to play fast matches against other players. It honestly reminded me of small local grounds, back in the days, playing with friends.
Career Mode
Career Mode in FIFA 20 was much better than in previous versions. EA had finally brought in what fans had always asked for. Press conferences and player chats began to influence player morale and growth. If you had a happy or depressed player, it showed in the next game for sure. Even the dynamic potential system makes every Career totally different since improvement relies on performance. The completely customizable manager was also a cool feature, to be able to select gender and appearance for the first time.
Ultimate Team
The typical improvements included some additions to FIFA Ultimate Team or FUT. For example, there were added “Season Objectives” were added to give longer-term intentions to pursue while grinding for rewards. Another addition was “FUT Friendlies,” where you could just play casual matches without contract or player fitness nagging. EA also brought more football legends like Zidane and Drogba as new Icons, making team building interest-provoking.
Licensing and Teams.
FIFA 20 still contains so many leagues and teams, covering even organized tournaments such as the UEFA Champions League. A little issue, however, comes in when one mentions Juventus; the team was never fully licensed but presented as “Piemonte Calcio”. It looked cheesy, but at least the right player names were present; hence, it did not affect the game that much.

My Viewpoint
I have spent endless hours with FIFA 20, sometimes returning to it just to play VOLTA matches. It is not up to scratch, but it’s better than all its other predecessors. It seems to me that this edition has made rather ideal balances and thus is fun. It’s worth checking out if you enjoy both casual and competitive football.
