Into The Dead: Our Darkest Days has surely broken the mold of regular zombie games. Its inner workings have nothing to do with just aimlessly running with firearms in hand. The game’s center revolves around survival, planning, and making all sorts of choices that could cause life and death.
The game begins in a fictional Walton City, Texas, in the 1980s. By the time the zombies turned up, the city was already crashing down with heat and its economy stomping at the very bottom. You are now leading a group of unhinged masses, and survival becomes all that matters.
Upon my first entry into the game, all I could feel was just how much the game required me to go slow. Making too much noise or hastily trying to get away could cause the end of your story pretty fast. The zombies do not forgive any mistakes made by the living. On one such night, I found myself trying to scavenge too fast, once surrounded. That was the lesson for me to learn how to respect the stealthy side of the game.
There is combat, but in a much less action-hero sort of way. You set up traps, craft weapons, and pick up debris from the ground. A couple of your group members might wimp out entirely when combat comes calling, but the moment your life is threatened, survival has a way of changing people.
Shelters play a major role in the game. You build safe havens, repair them, and get food and rest for your group. Yet that safety is never permanent. Every night, zombies mount an offensive to breach your defenses. The night they succeed and pull someone away from your group hurts more than one expects.
Deciding who to trust was among the more difficult things for me. Do you take that extra risk of meeting strangers? Give up your little supplies to help those in dire need, or keep some back for yourself for a rainy day? Some instances will even put you in a situation where you must pick who lives and who stays dead. The game, therefore, becomes very personal when compared to most others I have played in the zombie genre.
One thing that changes is the entire run-through regarding the storyline. Each playthrough feels like its own story. Into The Dead: Our Darkest Days free download fuses together a survival-type-feel story where it feels like every decision made just might be the last.
