This is a property that casts a stereotypical shadow over Japan.
It is one of those horror games, Japan Stigmatized Property, which does not require loud noises or cheap tricks to scare. Instead, it creeps into you slowly, and eventually, it is something you think about long after you stop playing. That is the real Japanese horror: it’s more about atmosphere and silence than monsters chasing you.
In this game, you play as a night surveillance officer whose job is to keep watch over properties in Japan known as stigmatized houses, where strange things or tragic events have occurred at one time before. All you have to do is sit and stare at security cameras and watch. Simple, right? Not quite. Things start looking weird; a door might move when it’s supposed to be blank, shadows appear where they’re not supposed to, or sometimes someone just stands in the corner watching.
When I played it, I found myself leaning closer and closer to the screen to maybe see if something really did change, or if it was just my imagination. It’s that scary: the game doesn’t shout at you, it just makes you doubt what you’re seeing. Miss enough signs and you lose.
The shift runs from midnight until 5 a.m. Trust me, those hours drag forever. At first, nothing happens. But just when you least expect it, here comes a small itsy-bitsy detail and flips stuff: flickering lights, strange objects moving, odd stains appearing on the walls, full-on spirits sometimes visible. Some of these things would only come when you turn on night vision, so you couldn’t just recline and call it a day. You inspected carefully, or you’ll end up missing something important.
You would be in charge of four different properties to oversee. Each property has its distinct flavor, its intensity of creepiness. Some of those places look harmless in the daylight, but at night, through the camera, they turn heavy and almost suggest something is waiting to show. There are also two play styles in the game. The normal player is intended for the Standard mode, while Special Assignment mode is designed to test the very limits of your nerves.
I think this is an excellent game for streaming. It’s the type of horror where everyone in your audience is as tense as you are, waiting for things to jump. I streamed it once for my friends, and when there were shadows I didn’t see or objects moving, they just kept yapping at me.
What I appreciate about this particular game is that it’s not about running or fighting. Rather, it’s more about just sitting there and taking stock. It asks that you be calm, even when everything in your gut screams at you to panic. It’s the kind of game that makes one take a second look at the dark corner of their room after having played it.
