There had been a set of great revelations the first time I played Master Detective Archives: RAIN CODE Plus; I was actually sitting there wondering what it would really be about. I thought it would go along the lines of other mystery games; however, it didn’t take long for me to appreciate how different this one turned out to be. The feel of the place with constant rainfall gave a sort of sinister touch to the atmosphere, where secrets seem to be hidden away by the city itself.
You are attending a training college for detectives called Yuma, when you find he is not alone in his path to the truth. Shinigami is a rather eccentric character who plays a substantial role in helping him unveil the truth. The back-and-forth motion of the story between solving cases in the real world and stepping into the surreal Mystery Labyrinth kept me hooked.
Gameplay Experience
Different parts are broken up when it comes to gameplay, and each one feels original:
Exploring the City: As Yuma, you walk around Kanai Ward, talk to NPCs, check crime scenes, and collect clues known as Solution Keys. Just carrying on from old-school games filled with detectives, old ones, where it was nearly every little clue that mattered.
Detective Abilities: Fellow detectives fight beside you, owing to them possessing different unique talents referred to as Forensic Fortes. Some might witness the past, while others will take disguises, and these end up affecting how you go about solving cases.
Mystery Labyrinth: Things are beginning to sound crazy, but this one is weirdly fascinating. Clues that you have obtained serve as a tool for proceeding through puzzles, traps, and odd things. Somewhat perplexing in the beginning, but once you’ve gotten the hang of it, it turns mighty captivating.
Reasoning Death Match: This is action-packed, and it pits you against a Phantom that attempts to hinder your search for the truth. Fighting back with the Solution Blade is like having a really cool logic-quick reflex combo.
The other thing I appreciated was all the extra content. Hidden Memory Shards show secret memories of Yuma and the other detectives. There are side quests where you help people in Kanai Ward, giving the world an extra lively feeling.
What I Think After Finishing the Game
I must say the game was an unexpected surprise. It’s like the mystery and action blend together in a really nice way; personally, I most enjoyed the time spent in Mystery Labyrinth. It was fun and rewarding to use all those clues I gathered in some earlier cases and apply them in battle.
The game is quite long, but well worth it, considering the amount of voice acting, story context, and cutscenes. I continued my gameplay on a mid-tier computer, whereby it ran quite well apart from the loading.
