Last week, I tried Military Incremental Complex on my computer, and it really felt like one of those games where you start with small stuff and gradually build something enormous. There was a time when I thought it would become boring, considering you had to start by making very basic bullets with your hands, but after a few minutes, one could say it fairly started to become fun. I enjoy games with progress through upgrades of individual items, and the game follows that very theme.
The idea was to set up a military industry. Simple projectiles to machine, factory, and up to bigger factories creating guns, tanks, airplanes, and finally ending with nuclear weapons. It sounds ludicrous, but the beauty of the game was in its simplicity of use, which never felt confusing.
A few other aspects that I admired were the way they structured their research. Unlocking items that feel rewarding after you research them is quite like a reward. You pick from a list to do something that either speeds up your production or lowers your production costs. There were occasions where I would waste points on something obviously wrong, but that’s all part of the learning curve. The stock market part was funny for me in that I was buying random shares and waiting for random passive income to show up; still, it gave a nice boost to earnings.
Then, there is government lobbying. I thought it would turn out to be complicated the first time I heard it, but it is actually pretty neat. You want a little fewer rules, better deals, and more demand for your weaponry. Made me think of those mobile idle games, but with much more depth.
I noted a huge number of ways to grow, thus offering every player individually an opportunity to choose his/her own play style. Since I am the kind of player who goes slow and steady, I spent much time upgrading the lower-tier production before moving on to higher-tier weapons. Someone else might jump directly into heavy stuff like tanks or planes.
