MISERY puts you in the boots of a private military contractor who guards the secret research facility, deep inside the Republic of Zaslavie. The name of the facility is the Scientific Institute for Research of the Zaslavie Exclusion Zone, or SIRZEZ. This installation was built before the war to study strange artifacts and odd energy readings, but those discoveries became the reasons for chaos when world powers began to fight with each other.
When the alarms go off, there’s no time for thought. You have exactly sixty seconds to take as much as you can carry before the mortars will land. Once you enter the bunker, it all starts- the real game simply surviving. You would brave the Exclusion Zone every day to get supplies, explore desolate cities, and discover things that might come in handy. The world is randomly generated, so each journey will have a feeling of being different. Pass through crumbling military bases, desolate labs, and ghost towns riddled with radiation.
The Zone is basically a nightmare of traps and strange events. That is not the only danger. You will find wild mutants; other survivors desperate enough to attack you for a can of food; and then strange anomalies that distort everything around them, like a magic environment gone awry. Some of them actually can save your life, while others can crush you in seconds.
No one really knows how those anomalies work. Some of them glow with strange energy, and in those areas, you might find artifacts: rare, powerful items that can strengthen your abilities or give weird effects. But they are not easy to get to and are protected by all sorts of dangers.
Your bunker becomes your new home away from home, where you improve it gradually with every room. I really liked this place because it feels like a personal compound: building something up from nothing. You can set up generators that run on gas, solar energy, or something weird like a gnome-powered one. You can craft weapons and tools, grow your own food, cook, and make your shelter feel a little bit like home. I once found an old sofa during a raid and dragged it back. It sounds small, but it made the bunker look less depressing.
You can spend those late hours in the underground bar of the institute after long raids. There is always someone to talk with, a few survivors, a trader, and maybe someone with useful information.
