Monsters Are Coming-Rock and Road looks simple on the outside, but this is one of those games you really have to play to feel how it hits differently. The whole essence of the game involves keeping your city moving as monsters keep coming from every side. I played last night and, to be honest, I never expected the game to get so intense. You gather resources, build defenses, and keep your city moving. If you stop for even a moment, the monsters form a giant wave that crushes you.
You can build your town hall and then place your towers around it. Some towers shoot arrows, some use magic, and some are just crazy-looking. In a rush, I messed up my first free building spree and spent much time correcting it. After a few runs, I learned to focus on where my towers could hit the greatest number of monsters. When the monsters get too close, it feels like they could overrun everything.
Rooting on a side, you keep collecting wood, stone, and gold while moving. On paper, it seems simple; however, in practice, it stressed you out. You are up against monsters on one end and trying to grab resources on the other. I went too far trying to fetch more gold, and when I came back, half my city had almost been obliterated. That was the lesson that taught me to stop being greedy.
The bosses in Monsters Are Coming: Rock and Road look psycho. Some of them take up a huge area, and you need special weapons that you unlock throughout the run to destroy them. You can buff your skills and try out different methods of survival. By the time I went near the Ark for the first time, monsters became strong. The challenge is real.
After reaching the shelter, you will be able to construct new districts for the city. You are able to choose which part needs upgrading. If your towers are weak, you upgrade that. If your city is not able to take any more damage, you repair it. With each run, you come to understand more what type of build works for yourself.
There are many town halls to be tried. Each gives different strategies. You can create archer outposts, necromancer towers, and even towers that spawn dragons to breathe fire. When I first created the dragon tower, it felt so good because it was one-shotting a huge wave.
Upgrading your build to survive against stronger monsters is the name of the game. With each passing step toward the Ark, the game becomes tougher. At some point, every tiny error counts. You would gather wood to fuel your engines, break stone for repairs, or mine for gold to purchase upgrades. This part reminds me of classic strategy games I used to play as a child.
At the end of every run, you collect compasses. It helps you on your next run to make things just a bit easier. This part is nice because, even if you fail a run, your work does pay off.
The game has many secrets, too. These can be found inside shelters and in side horde areas. You get great rewards but stand a lot to lose.
