I heard about OFF a few days ago when it was recommended to me by a friend, and honestly, I never really thought much of it. Initially, it seemed like an ordinary RPG, but once you step into the game, you realize it’s different. You meet the Judge, who introduces himself and explains about the Batter, a character with a strange and important mission to purify the world.
You are basically the one guiding the Batter, helping him fight enemies, solve puzzles, and move through different zones. The zones themselves are really odd but interesting. There are strange creatures, mysterious NPCs, and even mechanical setups like swan boats and trains. I remember getting stuck on a puzzle for nearly half an hour, but solving it felt rewarding.
The storyline has a dark feel to it. Characters fulfill roles other than always being friendly. For example, in Zone 1, the protector, with all regular confidence, tells you to leave with your ghosts; otherwise, he will kill you. That moment sent goosebumps across me. There’s a beautiful mix of crudely rendered visuals lending a haunted, perhaps even creepy, atmosphere that pulls you in so slowly.
What I liked most was that OFF doesn’t hold your hand too much. To explore, fight, think, and get surprised by the strange dialogues gives you the feeling of being part of the Batter’s mission – something I’ve not often found in new RPGs.
