Paradigm Island: Overview
Paradigm Island is a choice-based RPG in which every step feels like it is being made by you. The story starts with Mike, who was only a baby when he was found by mercenaries and raised as one of their own. Seventeen years later, he now stands on the threshold of his first mission. From a seemingly simple job, things have gone awry into a situation in which nothing is what it seems, and every single choice seems to matter.
As Mike, you are free to choose how to resolve problems: logic, gut punching, or chance thrown by the dice. I personally liked the dice system, as it felt like old-school tabletop role-playing games that I used to play with my friends.
Mike is not restricted in his characterization. You can build him whichever way you want—bulk, intellect, or someone attuned to the spiritual world. Testing all of these builds is fun because it changes the feel of the game entirely.
The NPCs in Paradigm Island are memorable for being unique. You can make friends, earn respect, lie, and trick them into getting what you want. I have attempted both; honestly, tricking a character was fun, but earning trust was quite a rewarding outcome. They all seem to hide something, and the game keeps you guessing about their actual nature.
That slight divergence is what makes Paradigm Island unique: Because every small thing matters. Where you think the choice does not really matter, later on, that very choice can come back to change everything. This further instilled in me that I was writing my own version of the story rather than being incandescently led by an exemplar.
