Project Introduction: Light Years of Project X
The Project X: Light Years are back, and somehow, it really feels like a mix between the retro and modern. Three decades ago, humanity faced another alien threat, and now the invaders return stronger than before. It’s a side-scrolling shooter that is a remake of the classic Amiga title; however, the graphics, controls, and effects have been enhanced to bring the action to life fully.

As you plunge into enemy-infested zones, you embody the spaceship and attack the enemy straight ahead in the game. Each stage, from asteroid belts to alien planets and gigantic space stations, is filled to the brim with imminent danger. What I liked personally is the fact that the game does not attempt to complicate matters. It gives an arcade challenge from the old days, but after all the new enhancements feels fresh and fun.
Game Play Overview
Enemies come in waves, and each wave is different. Some waves are made up of small, fast enemies, while others comprise tremendous bosses that initially feel invincible. One either pulls through with fast reflexes or fails. Personally, the most gratifying moment for me was the power-up collection. 35 different upgrades can make you a beast or ruin your game completely; the chaos adds character since no two games play the same.
Boss fights are another highlight. Huge alien ships armed with massive firepower and insane defensive systems stretched your limits. It’s a glorious feeling once you finally take them down after failing here and there a couple of times. This is the sort of satisfaction only an arcade tough shooter can offer.
Co-op Play and Replayability
If you don’t want to fly solo, Project X: Light Years offers a 2-player co-op mode, which I played with a friend, thus doubling the fun. Defending one another and blasting away enemies were reminiscent of the glory days of arcade gaming. The global scoreboard keeps the enthusiasm going. Competing against players from all over the world brings an added edge to the quest for their scores.
