As Marius Titus, a Roman soldier, the major turning point in his life was witnessing his family murdered by barbarian hordes. He joins the army in a fast climb up the ranks to lead ribald troops into battle against all odds. What begins as a personal mission evolves into something much bigger: the salvation of Rome itself.
The game throws you into the thick of Roman warfare. Swords ringing, shields splintering; every fight is messy, violent, and feels quite brutal. What I loved was that the combat was not just a button mashathon. You can time strikes, block your enemy at just the right moment, and then finish them in a savage, execution worthy manner. It is so satisfying that perhaps just a few can pull it off
Why Ryse Is Still Good
Crytek simply went all out with beautiful graphics, and even after a few years, 4K support for PC makes Rome look breathtaking. The armors shine, blood splatters, and the panoramic views of large army clashes. Chaos is most prominent. My favorite was the moment when we stormed the beach in unison with dozens of other soldiers, arrows flying, men screaming, and with the feeling that with just one wrong step, one would mark his grave.
But it was not all about looks. The story remains imprinted in memory. Marius is not the epic hero; he is a man whose shoulders are chained by misery, and that is conveyed with writing. Some critics dismissed it as being short, but I, for one, prefer an 8-hour ride that doesn’t waste time than a 20-hour experience swamped with pointless fluff.
