Salt 2 Shores of Gold is a laid-back, open-world game set on a pirate concept open world game where players wake up on a deserted island and try to figure out what to do next. When I first played this game, the first impression offered by an abandoned island somewhat felt real as it reminded me of those moments in gaming when you would just look around and think, okay, what now? You then start hoarding stuff, collecting wood, and gradually making a raft to head out into the open sea.
The map is huge; one could try it alone or invite a couple of friends. Your ship basically turns into this little floating home for you as you keep on sailing away wherever the winds take you. You’ve got islands with caves, ancient ruins, small pirate encampments, and anything else that has the potential for fun exploration and treasure finding.
You have a main quest line, should you ever decide to pursue it, but honestly, sometimes I just like to wander around for no good reason. Join some guilds and make some weapons, upgrade your gear, cook food, fish, and hunt as well. Initially, I found it slow to craft items, but I eventually got better at it because it makes the journey feel a bit smoother. You can also earn multiple levels for your character, thus unlocking diverse, alluring abilities that make everything easier.
The greatest part is that random players won’t attack you. So if you are anything like me and get triggered when someone tries to upset your progress, then consider it a peaceful game. It’s about piddling off into the sunset, exploring, quests, upgrades, and doing everything at one’s own pace rather than those huge sea battles. PVE is an important focus of the game. There are over one hundred items for you to employ while decorating your ship, and I swear I just wasted tons of my days making things compensate for each other.
The world keeps generating as you explore, hence you can sail endlessly. Just when I think I have seen everything-there comes that new island teasing me with even more new finds!
Huge Open World Exploration
Salt 2 stands for picking your answer-angle sailing. There is a compass and a sextant to check coordinates, and slowly and surely, you begin to grasp the map movement. Hidden islands, ruins, and small harbors of so many random dungeons to loot. Although the islands are generated ad hoc, the important ones are all hand-crafted. You’ll find secrets, small puzzles, and rooms that feel like someone actually designed them with care.
Your Ship is Your Home
Your ship travels with you, and you can decorate it any way you want. I remember laying random stuff everywhere at first, and it looked cluttered, but then I got serious about arranging it all. You can cook food here, fish, craft items, and just chill for a while before heading back out on the waves.
Fish and Hunt to Stay Alive
Food is needed in this game. I sometimes find myself just sitting by the water and fishing, as it calms me down. But when not fishing, I grab a bow and go hunt some animals on the islands. There are so many recipes for meals, and it’s fun to discover new ones since some give slight advantages in tougher exploration zones.
A World You Can Settle In
Salt 2 allows you to set your own speed. Some days I’ll be exploring for sparkly loot. Other days, I’ll be tackling massive quests or hunting down tougher bosses.
