Well, what can I say? I downloaded SHUTEN ORDER on my Windows PC, thinking it was just another one of those adventure games, but boy, was I surprised at how addicted I was really able to get to it within a short span of time. I was plunged straight into the world of collapsing humanity, people’s tension and confusion, and in this chaos arose a new, unlikely group, the Shuten Order. They have prophesied the doom of man’s existence and soon amassed so much power as to create their own nation.
Everything goes haywire during the festival that was to celebrate their new nation. The head of the Shuten Order is murdered. After that, the game takes a wildly unpredictable turn. You wake up as a protagonist with no memory whatsoever. Two figures appear before you, calling themselves angels, and they tell you something shocking: you are the murdered leader, revived. But it is not all rosy revival as you only have four days left to live, and you are erased in the memories you had.
Only by solving God’s trial can your life be extended. You have to find out who killed you. This is where the investigative component of the game begins. Well, there are five ministers in the Shuten’s Order, and one of them is the murderer. You don’t have the time to check all of them, so you have to pick carefully. I remember getting stuck between two suspects and second-guessing every choice. The pressure of the in-game countdown really makes you feel the weight of each decision.
What makes it stand out in SHUTEN ORDER from the rest is that feeling of being so intimate. Every conversation could be truth or complete folly. I have been at a moment thinking that I was on the right track, only to be derailed by a slight mention changing everything. I was reminded of those mystery novels where every last word makes you doubt your assumptions.
But the game is about collecting clues, sacrifices most especially. It’s always like, if you suspect one person, you sacrifice evidence against the other. This replay value is what makes it exciting because not only does each playthrough culminate in different endings, but also different experiences.

SHUTEN ORDER is not an adventure game, according to me. More like an immersion into a survival mystery, with the time always ticking against you. People who like dark stories, detective choices, and tension building with every passing minute should download this game without thinking twice.
