SOMA is an SCI-FI horror game developed by Frictional Games, the same company behind Amnesia: The Dark Descent. It sets place in an underwater research base called PATHOS II. The story raises a lot of heavy questions around what makes us human and what might happen if machines begin to think like us.
The game isn’t a weapon run-n-gun shoot-you-up type. It builds that tension up slowly. Radios are silent, food sources have been depleted, and most people are missing. The facility is left with machines acting like they are alive. By playing it, you feel like sucking into the ocean and having no escape.
I’d play it and find myself pausing often just to take a breath. The sound of water pressure and some strange mechanical noises made me uneasy. It is not jump scares that frighten, but atmosphere.
Gameplay and Experience
SOMA is all about exploration, discovery, and survival. You walk through empty hallways, access terminals, and find logs that tell the story bit by bit. You meet characters that make you wonder what is reality and what is not.
SOMA is not a monster alone. There are corrupted humans, shattered machines that wander autonomously, weird underwater beings, and a mighty artificial intelligence that monitors it all.
There isn’t a fighting system. When an enemy approaches, either you hide or you run. Personally, this made me feel even more afraid than in games where you carry weapons. Knowing that you cannot fight back makes the pressure even worse.
