Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 1 is something that many old Sonic fans were waiting for, including me. I remember playing these old Sonic games after school, getting stuck on hard levels, but enjoying every moment of it. It has been quite a long time, and this game feels like Sonic has finally come back to its roots. It has not tried to be overly modern or complicated; it simply feels like the good old Sonic game again.
Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 proceeds with the storyline after Sonic & Knuckles. Dr Eggman is back, and yes, he is still trying to eliminate Sonic once and for all. This time, he is back with more stylish versions of his old machines. The game is kept simple and fun, just like an old school Sonic game.
The gameplay feels smooth and familiar. You have the classic Spin Dash, which I personally missed a lot in newer Sonic games. The Homing Attack is also a great help when attempting to jump on enemies, especially if you’ve messed up your timing a little. The levels are fast but clear with no confusing sections, and the 2D style gives a true nostalgic feeling.
Definitely on PC, fair enough controls were easy to pick up on. The small size of the game optimally doesn’t take much space as an added advantage, considering it’s for a low-end system. The game continues to remain fun and playable even after so many years.
If you are a Sonic fan who grew up playing the game, or even if you are a newbie interested in a classic-style platform game, then Sonic the Hedgehog 4 Episode 1 is definitely worth checking out.

For me, honestly, this game feels like an actual throwback. I loved hurrying to finish levels and returning just to improve my time. It’s not a long enough game, but does keep you engrossed while you’re playing. To the Sonic fans, it is a good experience.
