About the Game
Spirit X Strike drew its origins as an action game by a solo developer heavily inspired from mostly God Hand, Ninja Gaiden, traditionally produced Shinobi, and anime series like Dragon Ball Z. Right away, it catches up with stylish visuals and appealing fluidity in combat.
The combat system is fluid and satisfying in execution, with special moves like Instant Counter, Super Strike, and Spirit Mimicry, which let you chain attacks upon your enemies while dodging bullets, steal enemy abilities, and give you some enormous boosts. Battles seem lively, inviting creativity and quick reflexes.
The passion of the developer shone in fine animation, tight controls, and explosive finishers. Nonetheless, there are some rough edges in the game. Some defensive mechanics can have those parry and dodge feel inconsistent; with enemies tracking too well, avoidance tends to feel a little unfair. The lock on the system and camera could also be finicky at certain points, especially with the boss fights, where precision would count the most.
There exist those occasional, noticeable reductions in frame rate even under the most optimal of PCs (RTX 3080/4070), for example. Other bugs include some frozen animations or unresponsive enemies around, which really break immersion. However, as said, the game is still Early Access, so there is a good chance that these will improve with time.
For all its faults, Spirit X Strike remains something of a promising experience. It includes six stages with six different bosses and four levels of difficulty, with a harder one unlocked after finishing the game. The developer is updating the game on an ongoing basis, counting on player feedback to do so, and the community is growing with discussions on both Steam and Discord. The combat is replayed a great deal, and some deep mechanics reward skill and experimentation. So, try it out if you are a fan of Bayonetta, Devil May Cry, or Metal Gear Rising.
