I remember the first time I ever got to set foot into a starfighter in STAR WARS: Squadrons. And boy, did it feel real: sitting in that cockpit, zigzagging to avoid lasers and chasing after enemy ships. It’s like you are a pilot. STAR WARS: Squadrons brings the complete package of space combat. Whether it is multiplayer with your squad or single-player story mode, you can fly ships of the New Republic and the Empire, from the classic X-wing and TIE fighters, and even modify your ship weapons, shields, and engines to do it your way.
Now the action is really intense: you can fly to places you know about, such as Yavin Prime, or explore a whole new location like the broken moon of Galitan. Every fight feels alive because you can adjust your squad, play tactics with teammates, and aim to finish objectives. I could spend hours switching power to shields and weapons, trying to survive a tough opponent. And to top it off, the whole game can be enjoyed in VR, bringing the whole experience home as if one is really sitting in the cockpit.
It’s a cool story, though. It tells the events after Return of the Jedi from both points of view. The New Republic stands for freedom; the Empire stands for order. It really gives you an idea of the whole struggle of the galaxy when you walk both lines.
If you’re really into multiplayer, this is where things get interesting for you. You can plan your missions with your squad in the briefing room, before taking off into 5v5 dogfights. Teamwork brings about a huge difference in fleet battles; Added to Star Wars: Squadrons are different starfighters for speed, like that swift A-wing, and for power, such as that heavy TIE bomber-and makes each battle so different from another. I still recall how I had customized my ship and redirected power exactly at the right moment, both of which helped me to outlive the odds in tighter match-ups.
Along with this, STAR WARS: Squadrons also features a well-developed system of progress. New ship components and cosmetics are unlocked as part of rewards every time you play.
