Sword of the Sea is a game that just feels different from the get-go. Developed by Giant Squid, the creators of ABZU and The Pathless, if you’ve played Journey, this one will remind you of it with an added twist of magic surfing. Instead of walking or running, you glide over waves of sand like a snowboard, skateboard, and surfboard mixed on a Hoversword, gliding into space.
Surf and Perform Tricks on the Hoversword
The gameplay is a little bit simple but quite addictive as you ride using the Hoversword over flowing sands and then huge horizons of waves underneath. You build speed, go airborne, and perform tricks such as spins, flips, and grabs. At times, I just kept trying jumps, over and over again, feeling so smooth and excited, almost as if playing a skating game, but in a different world, both relaxing and so thrilling.
A Moving World of Sand and Water
Sword of the Sea does not have a static world. The land looks as if it is an ocean, with the dunes rising and falling as the tides do. You get to traverse through deserts and icy mountains, among others, which change when you ride them. There are hidden ruins and secrets all over the place. I would enjoy just going around, watching how the world shifts around me while surfing.
Story of the Wraith
You are Wraith, resurrected from dying somewhere in a necropolis. The main aim is to seek out the sea buried by sand. Along your travels, you will find the ruins of ancient cultures and uncover many mysterious tombs. The best moment was when the dunes turned into glowing water, and fish began swimming around them. It makes the game ethereal because you are restoring life to the world.
Art and Music from Great Names
This whole piece is helmed by creative director Matt Nava and composer Austin Wintory. Beautiful visuals with amazing soundtracks are what their previous games are known for; this game is no different. The art style, extremely captivating, complements the soundtrack it has. Sometimes, I just paused riding on the Hoversword, listening to the background music.

My Experience with the Game
Playing the game for the first time brought back that feeling I had while playing Journey. Very calm and emotional, while also excited, while doing tricks. I love the adventure aspect tied to the peace. Sometimes didn’t even follow what was supposed to be the core way. Just riding around and enjoying the view.
