Last night, I played The Berlin Apartment on my old Windows PC, and honestly, I was feeling a bit different from the usual games I try. This adventure game has a short storytelling theme following Dilara and her father, Malik. The handyman father gets his daughter to help him refurbish an old flat in Berlin. Everything seems normal at first, but once Dilara starts checking out the rooms, she discovers tiny little things left behind by the people who lived in that place before.
And every time she discovers something, Malik narrates the whole story behind that particular item. I really liked this part because it made me feel like opening memories one by one. I remember once we discovered an old notebook of the man who lived before us in our house, and I was imagining his life. It gave me the same sense but in a more detailed way.
The game contains numerous mini-stories packaged into a single apartment. Each episode feels a little different: some slow and easy-going, while others feel emotional. Gameplay style also shifts slightly with every story so that it does not become monotonous. The whole apartment created a colorful, comic 3D style around a simple but well-made design. Other than that, I stopped from times to random things because they feel alive.
The best thing I liked was the way the city was shown through the game. The same flat turns into something else at the backdrop, bringing the change in the city as time passed over all these years. Not that it is really a huge open world. But speaking about stories, the audience can have an idea of how people lived there in other years.
