The Complex Expedition puts you into a strange and creepy place called The Complex. In the beginning, you are part of an expedition team meant to explore newly discovered areas. But things go wrong very quickly. You become separated and suddenly find yourself wandering through endless yellow corridors, not knowing where to go.
My first time there, I actually got lost within a few minutes. I thought I was on the right track, but instead, I ended up back where I started. That was the moment I knew this game was about more than just going somewhere; it was coping with confusion and fear at the same time.
Gameplay and Experience
The Complex Expedition is quite literally centered around the Backrooms legend, which already has that unsettling feeling of being lost in an endless maze. The entire game is portrayed through old-looking VHS footage, which looks a little bit more like an old tape recorder. This makes the entire experience that much scarier.
It is not about running and shooting, but about tension building. Each step becomes heavier; each hallway looks the same and yet different. New paths may open, or you may simply find yourself face-to-face with one of the many lurking lifeforms inhabiting The Complex.
Why do people like this game?
It is one of the most real-feeling Backrooms experiences.
It is always different with every playthrough.
Always keeps you on your toes, as one never knows what’s right around the corner.
At one instance, I had to take short breaks while playing; the silence in the game was just too unnerving. Even the sound of my character’s footsteps was too loud.
