Recently, I played The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood, and it is one of those games that sticks with you. It is not fast-paced or shoot-’em-up style. Rather, it is slow-paced, with choices that take you into the world in a pretty different way. Deconstructeam, the developers, are the same people who made The Red Strings Club, so if you’ve played that before, you’ll know their strong focus on deep storytelling.
You play as Fortuna, a witch who has been exiled on an asteroid for centuries. To change her fate, she makes a pact with a mysterious forbidden creature. That forced the whole story into motion. You then meet other witches, reconnect with old friends, and create cards that allow you to gaze into their past and future. Each choice has actual weight to it, and I liked how stories branch in different directions depending on what you decide.
Story Focus
What I found cool was that it took its time. It spanned decades and showed how Fortuna grew and changed through time. The coven of witches also has its politics and problems, where very often you need to decide on your involvement. Personally, before I act, I stop to reflect on my choices, knowing that it could determine the future of the society of witches.
Card Creation System
Instead of just collecting items, we design divination cards. There are hundreds of combinations possible. Using those cards feels really like a Tarot reading, but you create them yourself. That helped me feel some personal connection to the game, as the cards I used were my creations.
Music and Art
The soundtrack is the stuff of legend: over 3 hours of original compositions that set the atmosphere right. At times, I’d play to listen to the music while drawing cards. Everything is pixel art, with different styles for each witch. I appreciated their attention to detail regarding little things, such as backgrounds and expressions.
My Time With The Game
Playing this game was something entirely apart from my usual PC gaming experience. There were no gigantic battles or frantic level runs. Instead, what it is more about is story, choices, and atmosphere. It almost feels like you are an active participant in a huge book that allows you to control the path of the story along the way. That, for me, is refreshing, and I can easily see myself going back to play it to see how different choices affect the outcome.
