The Ultimate Tour de France Experience
This year’s Tour de France game seriously upholds the realism level. Now they are using Unreal Engine 5, and boy, does it show! From the roads to the famous race locations and even how the light hits your rider, it is crazy real. You will identify all these iconic places straightaway: Champs-Élysées with its wide boulevards, the brutal cobbles of Trouée d’Arenberg, that killer climb up Mont Ventoux. Even the pain faces up, Mur de Huy seems right on target.
What I really love is this sensation of surface difference; smooth tarmac vs. a bone-rattling cobblestone section, your controller feels different for each. Such little details make this experience so much more immersive than its predecessors.
Race Your Way
The coolest part is that you can form private races with your friends. Gone are the days of wild online matches wherein one quits halfway. Pick your stage, select how long you want the race to be, and even choose the weather conditions. A brutal mountain stage in the rain? Done. An easy flat sprint finish at sunset? You got it.
They’ve added this Criterium mode where you pick two riders and a jersey design. It’s perfect for quick races when you don’t have hours to spare. I spent way too much time making my custom jersey look stupid (pink with polka dots, obviously).
Game-Changing Refuel System
The big new feature is how they deal with feeding during the races. At the start, you only get one kind of energy gel. It gets you thinking about pacing rather than just spamming boosts. But after the feed zone? Now you get the choice between Energel and Turbogel.
Turbogel is where the difference really lies, giving like 5 seconds where you can attack full gas without paying for it later. Absolutely satisfying to use it well on the final climb and drop the whole peloton. The first time I did it, I might have screamed at my screen a little bit.
